Teens and Speeding: Breaking the Deadly Cycle

• The U.S. has a speeding problem. Driving at high rates of speed or too fast for conditions is one of the most prevalent factors contributing to serious and fatal crashes on our nation’s roadways. Over the past five years (2015-2019), speeding has claimed the lives of approximately one-third of all people killed in motor vehicle crashes. While speeding is risky for all drivers, it is particularly problematic for teens 16 to 19 years of age. A closer look at the speeding data reveals a troubling and persistent trend—the proportion of fatal crashes that involved speeding was higher for teenage drivers than for other age groups (43% versus 30%).
• While the youngest teen drivers (16- and 17-year-olds) have the highest fatal crash risk due to lack of experience, their older counterparts (18- and 19-year-olds) are more likely to crash later at night (midnight to 5 a.m.) and on highways and freeways. And when it comes to passengers, the risk of a teen driver being involved in a speeding-related fatal crash increases exponentially with each additional peer in the vehicle.

Four Suspects in Custody for Fatal Shooting at Fort Washington Food Mart

Detectives with the Prince George’s County Police Department’s Homicide Unit identified and charged four suspects in connection with Monday’s fatal shooting in Fort Washington. The suspects are 37-year-old Andron Wood of the 8900 block of Tower Mill Lane in Waldorf, 40-year-old Keionta Hagens, 47-year-old Thaddeus Lamont Wills and 27-year-old Quasean Reeves. Those three suspects live in the 800 block of Copley Avenue in Waldorf. They are all charged with the murder of 66-year-old John Woo Young Jang of Laurel.

Police District VII Crime and MD 210 Traffic Enforcement End of 2020 Report

 Major Mitchell reports compared to 2019:

• Overall crime in District VII was down 15.9%
• Violent Crime was down 23.5%
• Property Crime was down 14.8%

Traffic Enforcement on Route 210

From Major Keleti, Commander, Special Operations Division, PGPD:

I wanted to keep everyone informed on the progress we are making on our Route 210 traffic initiative.  The Traffic Enforcement Section assigned to the Special Operations Division conducted speed enforcement on Indian Head Highway between December 29th and January 3.  Below is the statistical data from our enforcement efforts.

I would like to highlight our activity for the week. 

• Officers arrested 3 individuals for DUI.  The evidentiary breath tests were .19%, and 2 refusals.
• A traffic stop for an inoperable headlight resulted in the seizure of 286 grams of suspected marijuana as the driver did not have a license, the tags were issued to another vehicle, no insurance and the vehicle was not registered.
• Lastly, another traffic stop was conducted for traffic violations and tint.  The officer located a handgun under the driver seat as the driver was charged accordingly.
